Laptop video/screen problem

I was given a Compaq Persario V6000 series laptop with a broken screen. The laptop works fine with video out and an external monitor. I ordered a new screen that arrived today, I hooked it up but didn't get a display. I didn't order a new inverter so I'm thinking that may be the problem. The laptop was my brothers and one night while drunk he stepped on it. I'm not sure if it may have done some other damage other than kill the screen. I don't really want to put anymore money into if there's something damaged inside. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
