I have a 2002 dell inspiron 8200 and I dont have usb 2.0. There is a plug that says 1394 but i dont think its the normal size firewire port. its really small. what type of firewire is it? (if it even is firewire) it looks like the ports on digital cameras. well i wanted to get an ipod, so i need either firewire or usb 2.0 and if what i have isnt the right port, do you guys/girls recommend me getting a usb 2.0 cardbus or a firewire cardbus and what brands are good? thanks.

it's probably the smaller (unpowered) Firewire port (I've got one on my VAIO)

i don't know if you need a powered port for a ipod, but if you're lucky you might get away with just needing an adapter cable

(depends if it charges through the port too or not)

What you have is the 4-pin 1394 port - un-powered. Any device you connect must have its own power source - other than than that, it is a normal Firewire port. I use mine on my laptop to run a buner (external Firewire) - the burner has its own A/C connection - no problems at all. The 4-pin port is designed to direct connect a digital camera or imaging device that has its own power.

Ipod doesn't have to have the powered (6 pin) firewire port for transfers but it won't obviously charge the battery up.
