Laptop upgrades...

I know it's well known that its difficult or almost impossible to upgrade hardware in a laptop, but I was wondering what exactly is upgradeable and what is not upgradeable. I know that the hard drive and memory can easily be upgraded.

Also, the laptop I have supports a max of 1GB of memory. Is it possible that down the road there could be a BIOS update that I could get that would allow 2GB max or is this more of a motherboard limitation?

It all depends on the specific laptop. Some are more upgradeable than others. For example almost everything on the Dell Inspiron 8200 can be upgraded. Such as the CPU, memory, video card, hard disk, optical drive, modem, Wi-FI, etc. With the proper docking station and modifications you can even add 2 standard PCI cards. Most laptops however, are not nearly that upgradeable.
