Laptop startup problems

I have an old Compaq Persario notebook, and the CD drive died a while ago. I managed to install an external CD drive by installing the drivers from a flash drive. I have to plug the CD drive into the only USB port the computer has, and if I unplug it from the USB port, the computer won't boot up. It only boots up when the CD drive is plugged in. Is there any way I can get the comptuer to boot up without the CD drive being plugged in so that I can use a USB hub for more USB ports?
