laptop showing 120M RAM with 8M VIDEO RAM...

for a total of 128M SYSTEM RAM. this is what is indicated in the BIOS. is that normal?? i would think it would show 128M RAM and whatever additional video ram. this is a gateway solo 1200 running winME. in "my computer" properties, it shows 120M RAM. this does not seem right. do i have a bad ram stick?

That means your laptop's video card shares the system ram. So if you had 256MB of ram and an 8MB video card, you would really have 248MB of ram and 8MB of video RAM. Gotta love intergrated components, huh?

Most of the laptops with newer 3d cards (yes, they are cards now...you can swap them 🙂 ) have dedicated video ram. Older laptops might not though.

Laptops and some integrated video solutions "share" the physical ram that you have on the board with the video card cause it doesn't have its own ram. Sometimes they have their own memory built in, and other times they don't so they have to use whatever ram you have in your machine and it's prevented from being used by the system(just the video).
