laptop screen question

I got my first ever laptop. The big issue I have is that on a black screen the top is black and then about halfway down it goes really light. So the bottom half is light the top is black. Watching movies is not good because of this when the scenes are dark. Is this normal or do I need to return this laptop.
 
It is possible that this issue is indigenous to this make/model. Go to a retail store and look at another similar unit to see if it demonstrates the same issue. Depending on what you find, you may have to either swap it for another unit or credit the purchase toward another make/model.

Uniformity is one of the standard criteria in determining LCD display quality/acceptability.
 
Definitely not normal. Exercise the warranty and replace it.
 
Well I went to BB today and looked at laptops.. they all do this. Apparently it is the poor viewing angles of TFT displays cause it to be a lot lighter on bottom than on top. It just seems worse than I expected. I couldn't find one that didn't do this.

I would say a great majority of the CFL backlit laptop screens suck at the black level thing.

I would hope that the LED backlit ones would be better but I don't know.
 
No this is LED backlighting.
The glossy screen makes it a bit worse too, but again every screen I looked at did this.. even the really expensive ones with the 5870 in it did this. Black on top and about halfway down it starts to get light. Really only notable on black screens, but annoying to me.

What angle(s) are you looking at it from? I have several glossy LED laptops and notice they appear different at angles than the older TFT matte displays.
 
HP 8740w with dreamcolor2

maybe the 8540w? i dunno if that is ips. the 8740w is and it is awesome.

go take a look at the mac screens. they somehow massage very good looking screens out of the air. i mean using carp technology they just look brighter/better somehow.
