Question laptop screen problems

dont know if its my screen or my GPU, i have a dell G5 5587. every so often the screen gets lines in it and darkens, has ghosting. i took the laptop apart and redid the thermal pastes, still happens. hooked up to an external its fine, it has done it while surfing the internet, and has done it when playing games. has done it when fans have been on, and when they haven't been on. would a bad LCD cause ghosting of images?
 
If it's the GPU, it should show up on an external display. I think. Not 100% sure in cases where you have both integrated and discrete, and the external port is hard-wired to one or the other.
 
well, i had a slightly older laptop that the motherboard went out, luckily the screen from it fit/worked in my dell G5, though it isn't quite the same model. colors are slightly brighter on it, but 2nd day now with no issues, so going to assume it indeed was the screen!
