Laptop screen is pure white. Ok on external monitor.

Have a one year old Dell 17 inch laptop. The lcd lights up but is white and when hooked up to an external monitor it works fine.

Am I correct in assuming that the led backlight is lighting but there is either a failure in the video cable or lcd? Do they work thru different connectors, the backlight part and the screen part?

There is a warranty issue and if I only have to open it and reseat the connector I may do that. Otherwise it will be a big hassle to get it repaired under warranty due to ownership transfer.

I've had this on a couple of laptops and some LCD monitors that were dropped or otherwise damaged. A pure white screen tends to mean that the video cable has become disconnected from the panel, but that the backlight is still operating.

In a laptop, the backlight and signal to the panel itself will tend to be supplied by different connectors.

With a laptop, if it's under warranty, I wouldn't fiddle with it - some of them can be a real bear to work with, and things like LCD panel connectors can be real fiddly, and you'll think you've got it in, only to put the whole thing back together and the connector to fall out a few seconds later.

If you have warranty you should not have any problems regarding about ownership transfer unless the owner already sent their laptop in for repair. All the company would need from you is the serial number and model and if he did not get it repaired yet then they will put your information in and you should not have any problems.

Regarding about the white screen it could be a loose connection or the little inverter inside may be damaged.

I use to repair gateway laptop and it's pretty easy to check to see if the connection is seated properly. However I am not sure with the model you have.

Good luck in getting it fixed and let me know what Dell says about you sending the unit in for warranty.
