laptop sata drive on a desktop

because laptop drives use a different power rating i am curious.
i have a brand new TravelStar 100gig 7200rpm Sata drive.
all the connectors look the same as a desktop drive but i dont want to plug it in if the power off a desktop psu is going to instantly fry the drive.

the drive will only draw the power it needs but that initial hit or future hits when powering on the desktop i fear may just blow my new drive.

alternately i have a USB 2 Sata enclosure that may work

what do you guys think.

and lastly i may just end up saving this bad boy for my xbox360 when they find a way to implement larger drives in the 360.. 🙂

From page 2 of an article on the excellent Silent PC Review , it looks like if the SATA fits, then you're fine:

Because SATA connectors are small enough to fit on the MHT2080BH, it can also be plugged directly into a desktop system without using an adaptor ? a welcome convenience considering how hard it is to find one for sale.

Of course if your PSU is surging power, then you could have trouble -- but the rest of the system would be in bad shape if that were the case. Apparently the laptop SATA drives are prized by the silent PC folks for cabling and power consumption reasons.
