Laptop refuses to start

Hi, this is a strange problem, partially solved via YouTube.

My Asus laptop X51RL series suddenly refused to boot. Searched YouTube and found a solution: Remove battery and power supply adapter. Press and hold the START button for 30 seconds or more. Replace supply adapter and press start button. Bingo! Life restored OK.

Question here is WHY and HOW does this work? And WHY does the problem persist after shutting down and having to go through this odd procedure again?

Any thoughts on this will be gratefully received. Thank you. CG

Could be cmos battery needs replaced, incorrect settings in bios, or failing capacitors on motherboard, to name a few..

This model was originally released with Vista - that was several years ago. Could well be the CMOS battery, and the procedure described by YouTube suggests that.

Thanks Burpo. Afraid it's all Greek to me and I just wondered how holding down the power button for half a minute whilst all power supplies were disconnected could then let me boot up again. Could it possibly have anything to do with discharging static?
I'd almost decided to smash the laptop up before I visited the YouTube 'solution'.

Now THAT is really something! Yes, when I first bought this new Asus a few years ago it was running Vista. Upgraded to Win7 and all worked just fine. It still works fine, I'm typing on it right now, so CMOS battery? Can I get this replaced easily?
Obviously I know nothing about such things.

It can be replaced, but not easily. You have to pretty much take the whole laptop apart to get to the CMOS battery. Here's a video that shows how:
