laptop refurb

I need help with a laptop I just bought (acer travelmate 630). I knew it wouldn't be functional ie. no o/s but I can't do anything because the bios setup utility isn't accessible because it has a password and I bought it at a university surplus sale. If anyone knows of any hot keys or the like that will allow me to reset it and get on with reinstalling the o/s PLEASE let me know. Acer wants my 1st born to wipe the password AND I have to send it to them. yikes

Good luck! Laptop OEMs deliberately make it very difficult to clear the BIOS password - and rightly so. Theft of laptops has always been a problem and this mitigates the threat. But, there may be some good hacker advice for the Acer. If not, maybe you can negotiate a loan of your first born? Sending it to the OEM is in most cases, the norm.

Do you have any way to contact the University IT department? it's a long shot but they MAY be able to help if you ask nicely. :cookie: be prepared to show a bill of sale and serial # for the Laptop.

Yes, ALL the big names want it sent back so they can collectively cover their asses if they can't fix it. They can blame it on shipping errors like 'WATER DAMAGE'. Had that experience with a Nikon camera. I appreciate the fact it's a theft deterrant but in the end they will wipe it for the person who stole it anyway, defeating the purpose. Given the age of the laptop, I find it hard to justify charging as much to clear a password as the laptop is worth. Call me cynical. Thx for replying 🙂
