Does anybody know of a site with a good, sensible database of whats available now?

I'm looking for something as light as possible (under 6 pounds), with a 1.2 GHZ chip or higher, 13in screen or better, integrated cd/dvd/cdrw drive, and geforce2/4go or ATI 7500 video...

ideas please???

You can practically have any laptop you want for $3k.

Look here (IBM ThinkPad T or R series) and here (Dell Inspiron 4100 or 2650).

Just realized I don't think either of those offer the ATI 7500 video, bummer. You'll probably have to get a bigger laptop. That's a shame because the Dell i4100 is a sweet laptop with a free DVD or CD-RW upgrade and free 2nd battery if you order online by Wednesday.

my personal favorites are the IBM T series and the HP Omnibook 6100 series. i feel they offer the best combination of features, power, portability and a "quality feel" that most other laptops can't seem to match. however, you'll be hard pressed to stay under $3k for those. although you should be able to pick up a refurbished one for considerably less, if you're comfortable with that.

one of the better deals around right now seems to be the compaq 2800 series. you can go to hp.com to configure one. you'd probably be able to get a mobile p4 processor, a large hard drive, a 15 inch screen, a fast combo drive for around or under $2k. a cool bonus with the 2800 series is the 2 usb 2.0 ports. but the weight might be a little bit on the high side if you're looking for a really light notebook. i think it hovers close to the 6lb. mark, although not nearly as heavey as dell's 8200 series. seems like a lot of notebook for a good price.

if you need something lighter, the dell 4100 series is a bit lighter, although you won't be able to opt for a p4 or a 15 inch screen. the IBM R series is decent too.

those would be my recommendations, but laptop preferences seem to be very particular to each person, so i'd advise checking them out if you can before you buy.

the compaq 2800 series offers the radeon 7500 with at least 32mb vram. i think dell 4100s have the option as well but i'm not positive.

i just saw at ibm.com a model of the thinkpad t30 goes for around $2199 right now. it has a p4 1.6mhz processor, 14 inch screen, and radeon 7500. you'd have to upgrade from dvd to combo drive, but it looks to me like a very attractive option.

Sorry for a triple post, but they do offer a Mobility Radeon on the 4100, but a very watered down version...

"Video Graphics: ATI MOBILITY RADEON video card with 16MB DDR Video Memory or nVidiA GeForce2 Go video card with 32MB DDR Video Memory for realistic images."

Under 5?!?! Dear lord, good luck :D

I can almost guarantee you will not find a lappy with an integrated dvd/cdrw combo drive for under 5lbs.... Nor do any in that weight category have any decent video cards....

there are few notebooks under 5 lbs with an optical drive.

toshiba portege 4000 series and fujitsu lifebook S series are super light. but they both have smallish screens and sucky graphics cards, as someone noted above.

the dell inspiron 4100s, compaq evo n600c and compaq presario 1700s are all well under 6lbs.

but i still think the thinkpad t series from ibm is the best way to go. especially considering your large budget. i think it's right at around 5lbs. and it's a very nice and powerful computer.

The Compaq Presario 2800T is a very sweet laptop I saw one tonight at CostCo B&M.

If you can wait until August 12 - 18, CostCo B&M is going to offer $100 off all Compaq laptops, you'll get a really sweet deal.
