I've never had a laptop before and I guess i need one for school now.
What do u look for when you buy a labtop?
As for cpu, i'm thinking some where in 1.5ghz
should I go for P4 or AMD?
I wont be doing much of gaming
mostly word, some programming...
I like compact ones, and slim,
I'm looking at Fujisu and Sony

recommadations?

Top of the range Dell Latitude if you want some of the best (Something like P4 3 gb, Ti4600, and 80GB hdd I think!) Very nice runs sweet as a nut only problem is it comes with a £2000 price tag!

If you're aren't doing any gaming, a 1Ghz CPU and integrated graphics would be plenty - even used or refurbished.

As bang-for-buck, Dell comes to mind . . . just don't expect "awesome service". 😉

I was in the same situation about a year ago, I did a lot of research and this is what I came up with:

Compaq EVO n600c
PIII 1.2
Radeon Mobility
DVD-CD/RW
14.1" SVGA+
256MB
30GB
Win2000
MOST IMPORTANTLY - 1.2" THIN!!!

I picked it up new on the bay for $1600 and have had NO problems with it.

I checked out the Sony's and they were just so flimsy, you grab one side to lift it up and the whole thing kind of creaks and bends.

Dell's are just too thick and clumsy for me.

Toshiba's are pretty nice, but the thin ones are sooo expensive (or were last year anyway).

I didn't think the IBM's were worth the asking price, especially considering the Savage graphics chip, didn't want that!

If I was to buy another laptop now I would buy the new model of mine, the EVO n610c.

Now it has a P4 up to 2.2GHz and the Radeon 7500 graphics.

You can get one at 2.0GHz on the bay, brand new for $1500 or so. Maybe less.
