Laptop Question

I'm a first time buyer of a laptop, and have only used a few models for short periods of time (having had access to one no longer then a day or two).

I'm stumped as to what to look for, and since I can't build my own as easily as I can with a desktop I will have to get a pre-built one. :-/

Here is what I intend to use it for initally. I will be at work or school where I have near constant access to an ethernet port, so websurfing and AIM, as well as some VB work, MS Office, Photoshop, dreamweaver/Front Page.

After some looking, I noticed the Sony Viao, and so far it's in my price range (sub $1500, prefering under $1000) has decent memory, and I can buy more memory for cheap on-line. What are good brands to look for? Anything to stay away from? I am considering running Linux as well on this thing, will that be possible?

Thanks,

Ny

I would look for a "laptop shopping/buying guide" somewhere on Google.com.
Here you won't get a complete picture, and this question is very broad.

There are too many things to recommend/avoid.
