Laptop question

My wife's HP ze5200 will no longer boot. I'm getting a "lost or corrupt ntfs.sys file" message. I've copied a new ntfs.sys file to the HD using the Xp install cd, but still no go.

At this point I'm ready to first try reinstall Xp, and failing that reformat.

Before I do that I'd like to extract as much info from the HD as possible. I've removed the HD from the lappy, and I have a laptop HD to IDE conector/adapter.

The problem is I can't figure out how to connect the adapter to the paltop HD. Unlike a desktop IDE HD which has seperate power pins, the laptop connection has the power running through the same connector as the data.

It's a IBM Travelstar HD, and from what I can tell the 5+V goes to a pin one in from the outside pair. Ho do I correctly hook this up to the hd?

Thanks!

The laptop to IDE convertor I got from compgeeks.com or newegg.com (forget which) included a pair of screw-on metal things for each side of the drive (to add the extra 1"), plus a pin convertor for the back with a standard IDE power connector soldered to it (red and black wires only).

If your pin adapter is missing the power connector, it could be defective.

No, my adapter does have the power plug on leads wired onto the connector backing. Even I can figure ouyt how to plug that in!

It's plugging it onto the lap hd that has me puzzled.
