For basic business apps is there any real difference between a 2800 XP athlon, 3000 A64, or a 2.8 gig P4

Thanks guys

I would also like to hear from those that have widescreens if they are worth an extra hundred and why.

THANKS

Wide screens are good... but u ll have to choose between WXGA, WSVGA, WUXGA.... different resolutions...

I have a WSVGA+, 15.4 inch screen. Its 1680 X 1050

Its worth it ... IMO. You can browse in two browser simultaneously... etc. See this pic http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Abhi/desktop.jpg

Note that some ppl find the text too fine. I personally find it just perfect.. So make sure u see the screen yourself before you buy it.

Thanks for the replies:

I have also been hearing that I "HAVE" to have a dedicated video card with dedicated ram or it really hurts performance of the machine.

What my thinking is that I get a cheaper laptop...ie...2500 XP with 512-768 ram with integrated video for about 800ish and throw in a good 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm notebook drive and I have a good desktop replacement minus gaming machine, but you are not going to replace your desktop unless you are going for a much more expensive laptop anyway.

Is my thinking here sound?

Thanks

dell has a goof desktop replacement for $1300: 2.8C, 512 or ram, 9700 mobile

use a 10% off coupoun and you have a really inexpnesive desktop repleacement (for what you get)

If you wanna play anything but solitaire, get a card with dedicated ram. Shared sucks.

I got a Inspiron 8500 (its a 8600 with a p4 M) with a geforce 4200 Go (64 mb), and it handles the current games (NFSU etc) pretty decently.

As shady said, the 9100 will be a very powerful desktop replacement. If you can live with that size/wieght.

A;ternatively, you could also get a 8600 with the 9600 (128mb).
