Laptop purchase

I am interested in selling my desktops and just getting a laptop. It needs to have 256 ram minimum, 1.2GHZ or higher, DVD, and at least 16MB video memory. I also prefer slim to big when possible. My price is about $1200-1400 max. I don't need more than 20GB hard disk space. Whats the best?

I would love to get in on this deal, but I am in TX 🙁

Good luck finding somthing like that in that price range...good slim laptops under $1400-1500 are hard to come by

Toshiba Satellite 2405-S202

ESUP: $1,579.00
Equipped with an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor4 1.6GHz, 14.1" XGA TFT active matrix display, 256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM, S3 Super Savage graphics controller w/16MB internal video memory, DVD/CD-RW multifunction drive, 30GB1 Hard drive, 10/100 ethernet, V.90/56K modem, Lotus® SmartSuite Millennium Edition, and Windows XP Professional. Service upgradeable 802.11b WirelessLAN is also offered.

It doesn't have to be slim really, but if its down to two equally equipped lappies and one weighs less, I would take the lighter one. I will be travelling some with it and using it at school, so I don't want a brick.

I used think that, but the new 2800 series is something to drool over (Anandtech has a review on it) 😀

Plus the Radeon video cards are supposed to be pretty sweet.

Nice! I think you might have hit the nail on the head. Great price for a lappy with 32MB video memory and only 6.69 lbs. Did you spec that at Compaq.com or somewhere else?

BTW, the other 1500T laptops have desktop Pentium 4 CPU's in them, so expect battery life to suffer, and it may get a little toasty 😛

Just Select the 1500T series, then select BUILT FOR YOU, then under "Select your category" select Personal Productivity, and the CONFIGURE AND BUY the first laptop on the left.

Be sure to select the DVD-ROM (24X CD-ROM is default).

I thought about that one too. There is a Toshiba in the for sale forums for $850 shipped, with little smaller screen, no CDRW (not important to me anyway), and smaller hard drive. But I much prefer the 14" screen and wouldn't mind spending the extra dough to get it. The only thing I don't know about is the Savage chipset video, since I will be playing an occasional game of WCIII.
