Laptop purchase question

I don't keep track with laptop prices cuz I don't own one.
However, I know Dell usually has very good sale once every few weeks and i wanna know how good the current deals are right now.

My good friend is moving away and I want to buy her a laptop as a parting gift. She will be going to school and is only going to be using the laptop to write papers, email and surf. She has a pentiumI or II at best right now which has all sorts of problems...

She will be leaving in about 2 weeks...Is today a good day to buy? I was looking at the inspiron 2200 for about 550ish bucks.
help me out geek brothers!

Specs on the 2200?

Dell Home has an Inspiron 1200 (1.3/256/30GB/combo) for $499 with free shipping and no sales tax in most states.

Find a deal over in the Hot Deals forum and post questions in there... Those are the people that watch for the good deals...
