ok so i have always been a desktop guy and aside from adding memory or swapping peripheral drives and lcds i dont know anything else about laptop architecture.. so here is my question

if i have a inspiron 1100 can I upgrade to a P4-M or a P-M??

if so how...where is the best place to buy the new processor and is there some online manual on how to do so...

i dunno what processor comes with the inspiron 1100 but in order to use someting like the p-m or centrino processor, you'd need a mobo that supports that processor which is the ... i forget which chipset :)

It's easy to do (I recently upgraded my 8200 from a P4m1.5 up to 2.2Ghz), but your limited to what the mobo supports. It looks like the 1100s use desktop CPUs.

I am willing to bet the 1100 has a celero 2ghz chip in it, maybe a 2.2 chip. I do believe those are the two biggest choices for the 1100, though i have seen them with the 2.2ghz P4 chip in them. It "should" be relatively easy to upgrade it to a mobile p4. it is a socket 478 with 400mhz bus in it. to get to it you take off the panel with the power button, then the keyboard and BAM there is the heatsink you need to unscrew (i am doing this off memory, i am at work). Now, i had an 1100, i tried to put a mobile 1700 in it but it read it as a 1200 though, couldnt get it to run at the full 1700 speed. I put the celeron 2ghz chip back in it and wound up putting the 1.7ghz mobile in a desktop.

as far as where to get one, try ebay or the for sale/trade board, people sometimes have them for sale, since they do work in desktops too.
