Laptop Processor Replacement

OK, I have a Compaq R3460 with an A64 3200+, it's 3yrs old and out of warranty and I want to get a bit more out of it. I am reasonably sure it's a skt754, so my questions would be anyone have a guess if I could drop in a desktop skt754 3700+ with the IHS removed or maybe a Turion ML44 and have it fire back up at the correct frequency?

Any help would be appreciated!

Sure, but does anyone know of a way to find out what processors are supported by a specific bios other than contacting Compaq directly? They tend to be less then helpful with technical questions especially if your device is no longer under warranty, I've tried searching their web site but have come up empty....same results from good old Google, but what are the odds someone else has tried to upgrade the processor of my specific laptop.....

might be trial and error if you are trying to use a desktop chip. but i know that when you go to download a bios they usually tell you whats been updated from over version to the next.. then again, that information would probably be related to the laptop and nothing about desktop chips

maybe you could find a cheap used one on ebay or something, then if it didnt work you wouldnt be out too much from the attempt

also i just thought of something else. laptops are generally built around a certain thermal threshold. those desktop cpus will run hotter than the laptop equivalent
