Hi, i'd really appreciate any help anyone may be able to offer. i've got an ecs sysytems green 732 laptop, sold under the multivision brand name. It has a 2.53ghz pentium processor, 1024mb RAM, ati mobility 9000 graphics, 40gb hard drive and is about three and a half years old.

I've had problems with this laptop since it was about three months old. At this point it started crashing, this happened with increasing frequency over the period of week until it got to a stage where it would only show a black screen on reboot with no other signs of life other than the fan spinning. If I left it for a few days then it would usually start up fine but it would not be long before the cycle started again. It was sent back twice under warranty but they never fixed the problem which would always reappear within weeks of being returned to me. Unfortunately Multivision went bust before I could pursue the matter further with them . Since this time the laptop has been at the back of a cupboard with the occasional trip out for me to have an attempt at getting to the root of the problem.

Over the three years i have replaced the hard drive and the processor with no difference. Memory diagnostics have not shown any problems with the installed RAM and the drivers are all up to date. The only way I can get this laptop to work now is to remove and reinstall the processor, this fixes the problem everytime, it will work fine for about two days then start crashing again with the black screen on start up. If I repeat the procedure with the processor then its fine for another two days etc. (whats that all about??). As you can imagine this is hardly an ideal solution to the problem. If I knew it was a problem with the mother board I would replace that but how can I be sure, its a lot of money if i'm wrong.

Any ideas, I am at a loss and would be very grateful for the opinion/advice of anyone who feels they may have an angle on this.

Cheers Steve Mac.

Hmm... At a quick glance it sounds like a heat issue. It could be that the CPU vent is getting blocked, either due to obstruction, faulty design or dust. Have you tried blowing out the vent with canned air? Also, what kind of processor is it? I had a buddy with a Toshiba laptop that was running a full-on desktop processor in it and as a result had terrible heat problems. Also, since you're continually pulling out the CPU you may want to check the thermal grease as well.

Hi HD, thanks for taking the time to reply, yes the vents are clear and i've had a good old clean out of dust from the machine but this does not seem to have an impact on the problem. Thats a good point about the processor, its a pentium 4 Northwood running at 2.53ghz, as far as I know though it was intended to be used in laptops. I'm using arctic silver thermal grease when I pull out the processor so I think thats covered. The machine does not need to be stressed to cause it to crash, basically after 2-3 days following processor reinstall anything can set it off. If I leave the machine to cool for a few days then it will still crash pretty quickly on startup. the only thing that will make a difference is the processor reinstall.

What I really don't have any idea about is why taking the processor out of a non responsive machine and then re inserting it can have things running perfectly (albeit temporarily) within five minutes. I can't help but think that this is giving some indication as to what the problem is but I have absolutely no idea what. Is it possible that taking the processor out resets or discharges something in the system that then builds up to problem levels over 2-3 days or am i really clutching at straws??

Like I say HD thanks for the reply, i'll keep monitoring the temperature issue, any other thoughts you or anyone else may have would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Steve Mac.

when my friend and i bought this model 4 yrs ago, his immediately had similar problems. one of his ram sticks was bad and replacing it fixed the problem.

mine still works fine. i found your post in searching for info on how to quit the fan. any ideas other than cleaning? i wanted to find a replacement one that is quieter.
