Just tell me whether this theory is possible. When I first got my laptop and the battery, it ran fine using both the adapter and the battery but it would not charge at all. I tried discharging it completely and then the battery died completely. I got a new battery from the manufacturer and the same problem, the machine will run on the power that came with it but it will not charge above that level. For example, it comes to me with 15% charge, if I use the adapter it stays at 15% all the time but if I use the battery it drops until it hits zero.

The theory:
My laptop can use batteries but it can't charge batteries?!?!

Theory #2:
I just have really bad luck and got two batteries that can't hold a charge.

I'm interested to see which theory everyone believes is more likely :)

My vote goes to #1 too. I doesn't seem reasonable that you of all people twice should recieve a wrecked battery.

AoD ;)

Thanks for all the replies so far :)

The laptop is an IBM thinkpad, it also emits a rather noticable high pitched hum when the ac adapter is plugged in. Could this be a sign that somehow the power isn't getting to the battery because of a faulty component?

I tried both bays to charge the batteries and neither of them works :(
Does anybody have any idea how much it would cost to fix up a laptop?
