I'm curious, what if you had successfully completed the laptop order checkout with no problems (when it was still showing "in stock" in large letters, and before the "not for sale" notice)? In fact MyPC21 had emailed two separate order confirmation notices this morning! Later they send a third email saying the laptop's backordered and told me to call if I want to cancel the order.
If I don't cancel, can they still drop my order, or raise the price if/when they get new stock to fulfill the backorders?
I finally called a CSR and she said they ARE getting some more units of this laptop in a couple of weeks but it will be for the regular price of something like $1900. She pretty much implied that they will actually either drop the backorders or make them pay the regular price. I can understand their position, but dang, a larger store like Buy.com or CompUSA would've honored backordered purchases if the fault was on their part. I mean, if you don't use any type of real-time or near-time updated inventory system on your ecommerce website, why bother flashing the big "IN STOCK" sign on the order page (and sending out order confirmation notices)? They could've even just put up some type of notice saying "only 3 in stock" to begin with. If the website had correctly displayed the backordered status at the time of my order, it wouldn't have raised my hopes so much.
Heh, remember when Buy.com made a pricing error on some monitor a while back and a boatload of people took advantage of it?

Buy.com's site correctly indicated the backordered status for the majority of the orders (but still let the orders take place). And remember this was in fact an honest price listing error (which is usually covered under some legal clause). But some greedy lawyers filed a class action suit against them anyway...
