The refurbs are an EXCELLENT bargain. I've bought close to $50,000 worth of refurb equipment off of Dell the last two years, and the only problems that I had were on a couple 4000 series laptops. Other than that, they are as good as new, and $100's less.

You'll probably be able to get another $100 off of for ordering online too. Doesn't show up until you put it in your basket.

That sounds like a great deal, I would only be concerned about possible dead pixels but Dell refurbs have the same warranty as new laptops.

If you get a Dell, be sure to get the complete care warranty. It covers just about anything that can happen to your laptop (drops, spills etc).

Get a Dell 4100 with an extra battery--over 8 hours of power, 14.1 inch svga, and about 5lbs. Take out extra bat and put in either floppy or cd-rom.

Great laptop

woo hoo... the refurb i saw was put back up:)

right now im deciding between that refurb, the compaq evo n180, the toshiba s1800 (crappy battery life tho...), and the toshiba 6000 pro

the new ones are cheaper than the refurb, but i'd still have to buy office xp pro separately so itd come out to about the same price... what you think?

im starting to like that compaq evo more and more... all thats holding me back is my sister's compaq laptop was a POS and so are my school's compaq desktops... but this seems more like a high end product and i know the compaq high end stuff can be really good (ex: p910 monitor)...

anyone know if the evo is any good?

You said you're going to be using it for school. Have you considered looking into an academic version of Office XP? Usually the computer maker can hook you up with it. It's not the same as the $5 or $50 versions you can get at school (in some schools) but it at least knocks about $200 off the price of the laptop. Look into it. I know it's an option because I sold it to many people when I was working for Gateway. Usually people had to specifically mention it to me though.

My vote for Toshiba or IBM. You don't get as much bang for the buck, but you get solidity from the only two companies out there who can design and build their laptops from scratch - especially for the higher-end models - so control the entire process.

I've dealt with Dell on a long-time basis as an IT vendor. They do provide value and their laptops as well as their desktops are extremely well specified and attractively designed. However, it's hard to put my finger on it but it's not just the lack of reliability on a 'big picture' scale - it's something else that rankles about Dell laptops.

Don't buy refurb. Buy new. Also if you are in school, as TheGrandCow said, the Education versions of software are dirt cheap in comparison. MS likes to indictrinate you into their products as early as possible...

unless the education version has the exact same stuff as professional, i cant get it because the school specifically requires office professional...

where can i customize the toshibas? i've looked at their site and it looks to me like you can only change/add a very limited number of things (ie RAM) and very few had windows XP pro...

My favorite laptops right now are the:

Dell Insprion 8x00 Series
Sony VAIO GRX Series
IBM ThinkPad T Series

They are all good mid to high range systems with lots of available features.
