Laptop owners: Is it bad to leave your laptop on 247?

my laptop is my main system until i get the funds to build a new desktop.

just found out the joys of remote desktop. 🙂
 
I used to leave my iBook on all the time when I stopped taking it places with me. It'd be up for 3-4 months at a time.
 
I have had my work laptop on for at least a month or so (always on and up). It's not going to hurt it.

edit: ...but never put it in the bag and powered up, that will kill it.
 
My laptop is my primary machine now that I am at university. Because of this, I tend to leave it on all the time.

i was told yes because of the battery would get killed by having it constantly charged.
 
If you are going to have it plugged in for long periods of time without taking the laptop anywhere, take the battery out and run it off the AC adapter only.
 
I think my record laptop uptime was about 150 days (win2k) .... I use it all the time for websurfing, IRC, vpn, secure shell clients, watching DVDs, listening to music ... etc.
I am surprised win2K can run that long without a reboot.

This uptime is almost half as much as my record uptime on my server.
 
cool. i was abit worried it would damage something if left on too long.

though, im not planning on leaving it for extended periods of time to warrant removing my battery.
 
I see battery myths abound.

Leaving it plugged in will not kill modern batteries.

Time kills LI batteries just as fast as usage.

Plan on buying a new battery every 1-2 years and use it like you stole it.
 
Use a utility like SpeedSwitchXP to set your Pentium-M speedstep to run in dynamic switching mode while on AC power. That will help keep it nice and cool. (Needless to say, don't run DC projects on your notebook either.)

I run a Pentium M Toshiba Laptop 24/7 and with SETI running, runs nice and cool and cranks out 12 WU's a day.


 
7 days currently, record was about 4 months

i use speedswitchxp to set the lowest clockspeed, and ik8fangui to set the fan speed on slow...cpu never goes above 80F...i only increase the speed if i'm watching a movie or something.

if i take it home, i turn it on whilel i am home

I leave mine on pretty much all the time. Do any of you guys using any sort of cooling device to help the cooling?
 
i can run mine for ages as long as the cooling pad is underneath it.. otherwise it gets way too hot. I got to send it in to gateway, something's up with the cooling system that is onboard.
 
Technically, mine is "on" all the time. (Patio/smoking room laptop), but when I finish smoking, I close the lid, and it goes to sleep in about 5 seconds.
