Laptop motherboard ground question

So I have collected a bunch of laptop hardware, and plan to make a low power torrent/music box. I am going to house it all in an xbox which bit the dust, and i had originally planned on taking out all the metal foil that lined the inside of the xbox. Then it occurred to me that most laptops I had worked with had some sort of metal protection around the motherboard as well (as well as desktops with metal cases i suppose.) I assumed this was to absorb any kind of discharge the laptop could be exposed to. But is this metal part of the ground for the board? i know its not necessary to run the board, but would I be better off incorporating the metal lining of the xbox into my system. Such as mounting the pegs to the metal instead of just to the plastic?

Edit: Dont think my post was very clear, i have basically 2 questions. What is the purpose of this metal lining, and is it in my best interests to use it instead of scraping it.

thanks

Well i decided i am just going to keep the metal lining, figured it cant hurt, so why not. There were several parts that protruded up and made contact with the xbox motherboard, and thats why i was originally just going to take it out (since i didnt see the purpose of it,) but they broke off quite easily. However i am still interested in its original purpose, so if anyone would like to fill me in...
thanks

For shielding to do its job, it has to be connected to ground at some point - I suppose that was the easiest way to do it.
