Laptop modem with multi line phone

I am trying to plug my laptop modem into the phone jack at work but I am getting "no dial tone detected". The phone has four lines in one jack. Is there some way for windows to tell the modem to select a line or do I need some sort of adapter to make use of just one line for the modem?

you'll need an adapter that will cross over the lines. The modem, unless designed for it, will not support it. You can pick up what you need a t radio shack for pretty cheap

If the phone is an 'electronic' variety your SOL, the signals are not compatable with anologue modems.

Digital phone systems can even burn out modems.
