Laptop memory

I am having a hard time finding memory for my toshiba laptop. I bought it in Canada and I am wondering if the model number is hard to find here in the US due to this. Anyway, how specific is laptop memory...what I mean to ask is, is there a generic laptop memory or is it crucial to get memory that was made for your specific computer? I have a Toshiba Satellite xcdt2540.

Assuming it uses SODIMMS, there is generic memory available. You should always contact your laptop manufacturer first, as they will carry the memory as well as tell you of possible conflicts with generic memory.

Your laptop is a Satellite 2540XCDT, and it is listed in Crucial's upgrade database. It can take a max of 160 MB . . . 32 is fixed on the mobo. There are two modules available:

32 MB, P/N CT147380 @ $122.39
64 MB, P/N CT182276 @ $223.19

That is expensive RAM!

That's as generic as it gets unless it falls off a truck somewhere.
