All laptop memory are the same right..?? i don't wanna click on the customize thing from HP cuz i know i can get a gig of laptop mem for cheaper.

just asking the question,, are they all the same.

Not unless you buy the exact same type of memory. There are many types of laptop memory but if you buy the right type it should work.

If you want a guarantee it will work, use the memory selector at www.crucial.com

If you're asking are they standard sizes, yes, laptop ram has standard physical sizes and interfaces, just like desktop ram.
Just to be 100% clear, that's sizeS and interfaceS. Usually buying the right size, type, speed is all you need to worry about but there is more than one kind.

Check out the memory configurator at crucial.com for your brand and model. Might be more economical to buy upgrade there.

yea ,, thx guys, i was just asking about sizes ,, cuz i know how Dell and SONYYYYY likes to make their own CRAPPPP.. and not let u touch UR OWNN property.

some sonys use MICROdimms which are going to be rare and expensive. I believe all the HP laptops use sodimms, which would be cheaper to get yourself. Make sure you get the right speed and type (ie. ddr or ddr2)

Current laptop memory in use, all SO-DIMM form factor:

*Memory type*: *Speed*
DDR: 266(rare), 333, 400(not officially supported on most systems); used in 400MHz FSB Pentium M's/Celeron M's and Turion 64
DDR2: 400(common on budget systems, used on 533MHz FSB Pentium M's/Celeron M's), 533(Used on 533 Pentium M's, some Core Duo systems, some Turion 64 X2), 667 (Core Duo & Turion 64 X2)

Some Sony's and other ultraportable machines use micro-SODIMM's, which are smaller and more expensive.

Before you buy anything, use the memory configurator at http://www.crucial.com. If you purchase using that tool, they guarantee compatibility. At least use the tool to find the right memory if you purchase elsewhere.

make sure that the laptop will not come stock with all the slots full.

dell is the worst for this, if you get 1gb it will be 2x512

Dell uses standard SODIMMs, I should know, I own one.

Sony's ultraportables use MicroSODIMMs which are simply smaller then regular SODIMMs and not at all proprietary. Toshiba has an ultraportable that uses MicroSODIMMs as well.
