Laptop memory

First thanks for the help in advance.

Is there any issue in placing faster memory into a laptop than recommended? For example using PC4200 instead of PC2700?

Newegg's price is cheaper for the PC4200, is the reason I ask.

Might wanna consider what TYPE of RAM that is. If you're looking at PC4200, that sounds like DDR2. If your laptop uses PC2700, that is DDR1. Incompatible 🙂

maybe its just best if i ask what memory do you recommend for a dell 700m? currently it has 256m, i was thinking 512 or 1024m. single or two depending if you recommend going under the keyboard?

Dell 700M uses the 855GME chipset, which supports DDR333. You could use DDR400, it would work, but you wouldn't get any performance out of it. Just buy some DDR333 and you're good to go 🙂

that's probably DDR2 - won't work in a 700m. get a 256mb stick on fleabay for $15.

Most dell lappys i have worked with have dual slots on the underside of the lappy. Nuttin under the keyboard.

I personally have no experience replacing memory, but by searching these forums there are links to the Dell 700m instructional manual. It shows a memory location that requires the removal of the keyboard to access.

Most late model laptops put one memory slot on the bottom for user replacement and another slot under the keyboard that is harder to get to, but still not a challenge; that is where your base memory will be if you want to replace it
