Laptop memory question

I have a old Laptop that only supports up to 288mb(including 32mb onboard). It only supports 2 128mb sticks to achieve 288mb. Anyway I had 2 256mb PC100 sticks and figured I would try one of them just to see if it will detect half of it. Well it did and it shows it as 128mb.

My question is if I run the 256mb sticks in it over a period of time will kill them somehow?

Nope, but it could produce error to the system depending on the type of ram. Have you tried locating a newer bios for that laptop to see if it will enable it to detect higher density rams?

It's a older P2 333mhz. My GF uses it for word mostly with some email and internet. I had to download the latest BIOS before I could install Win2000. There site actually said that which I thought was odd. I got a little bit newer laptop coming late next week and I thought I would put these 256mb sticks in it to help smooth things out from the 96mb it had in it.

I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't damage them because I was gonna use them in the other one for 512mb.
 
As for damaging the ram, no it wouldn't. But there is a good possibility you could get errors but that is a big "could". So go ahead with your plan but test the system with all the programs you plan on running to see if it will cause errors.
