I was wondering that what is the limit for my laptop. I use my laptop usually for 10 hours straight. Will it result in getting overheat and break down?

My laptop stays on 24/7, crunching Seventeen or Bust... The only time it gets turned off is if I actually take it anywhere, which is rarely.

Unless you have something like an A64 4000 sitting flat on your desk running F@H all the time, don't worry about it. Especially if the machine just sits idle most of the time, I bet you can get away with running a P4 2.2Ghz in a 75 F (24 C ?) room.

You'll know it's having problems when the fan begins to sound like a leaf blower. If that happens, just go to Fry's or Circuit City or something and pick up a a laptop cooling pad (a flat platform with a raised back to let the air circulate underneath near the fan inlet and RAM). Or if you keep it on a desk all of the time and are cheap and/or like me, fold up a piece of paper until it's a square about an inch by an inch, tape it up, make another one, and you now have two blocks to hold the laptop off the desk a bit. That's exactly what I do. I don't really need to, but I fold all the time and it helps enough that the fan runs at one speed notch lower than it would flat on the desk; it's the difference between a steady whooosh and a low hum. It's just one of those simple little things that make all the difference in the world.

I've found that after 6 months or so, my fans will be running noticeably higher. A can of compressed air in all the inlet ports blasts all the dust out and the fans run at idle speed again.

You're fine, over time the bearings on the fans will begin to degrade and get noisy. So they?ll in time need to get replaced, just like any other moving part in your laptop. ;)

If you check out the post by ?aerofan897?, that?s a good bit of advise. Especially in your situation.

Is your screen fully powered during this 10 hour period too?

If you leave a static image on there for too long you?ll get screen burn as you probably know. Leave a static image on there long enough and you?ll get brail all over the screen face :p

To save on your screen, you can go to Power Options in XP (right click desktop, Properties, under screen saver tab) and set your monitor to turn off after a certain amount of time.

I usually keep my laptop in a base station, and I wanted to turn my monitor off on demand (since closing the lid was out). I ran across an .exe that did this, I might be able to find it if you were interested.
