Laptop LCD screen connections/connectors

I noticed when I opened my laptop that the connection between the LCD screen and motherboard there is a proprietary connector and I was wondering if
1. Is the LCD controller software ON the motherboard or in the LCD
2. If it's on the LCD, are the wires typically standard and if you were to 'splice them', you could connect it to a VGA video card?

As far as I know the controller is on the MB. You cannot use a laptop LCD on a desktop.
