Laptop lags ONLY when connected to the network... sort-of

I have a Sony VAIO Laptop (1.6 GHz) that I reformatted a month or two ago because it suddenly started lagging, and I didn't have enough time to troubleshoot it. I have all of my data files and installation CDs saved to a network location.

So I reinstalled Windows XP on this laptop, installed Norton AntiVirus, and connected it to the network. Boom. Lagging. The *entire* machine acts like it is an old 486. Seriously, it takes over 5 minutes to start internet explorer.

I finally got tired of that, and decided to use mom's 800 MHz Gateway Solo Laptop. It was running fine, and not lagging. I brought it downstairs to my office, and reformatted it, so I could get rid of the garbage that was on it, and start new. I installed Windows XP on it, and loaded NAV. Connected it to the network. Instant lagging.

I only have 1 ethernet drop in my office. I also have a wireless access card. The VAIO was initially connected to the ethernet jack, but has since been moved to the wireless access card, because I have a desktop now requiring the ethernet drop. When I brought down the Gateway, I gave it the wireless access card, and removed it from the VAIO, thus leaving the VAIO without a network connection. Suddenly it's as snappy as the day I bought it, 2 years ago. Everything is very prompt, and works flawlessly. Internet Explorer is opened nearly instantly, when I click on the icon.

That said; I just moved the wireless access card back to the VAIO (hotswapped it). No lagging. I rebooted. Guess what's back! I can barely do anything again. If I click on a hyperlink in Outlook it takes a month or five for internet explorer to load.

I hotswapped the card back to the Gateway. The VAIO is no longer lagging again.

Can anyone think of anything that would be causing this?

Have you tried it without norton? I switched to AVG because norton worked so horribly on all my pc's. Norton does alot of "scanning", especially with net related tasks like you describe.

No, haven't tried yet. I'm planning on doing that some time this evening, as I'm on my way out the door.

The weird thing is... if I hot swap the network card to the machine, then it doesn't lag (while I'm connected to the network). But after I reboot the machine, it lags terrbily.

I'll try some things and post back later. Any more ideas?
