Does anyone know if you have to do something special to get function keys to work on a laptop? I've never had one and honestly have no real experience messing with them.

Some laptops require that you use function keys as combination keys. You hold down a key labeled Fn, usually green or blue near the space bar, and then press a function key in combination with it.
