I am having a problem with my old Toshiba laptop a45-s121 running XP Home . When I type a "b", I get "bn" , when I type " y " I get "5y" , when I type F7, I get "6" . Typing some other keys give similar odd results .

I have check for spyware and viruses and have run chkdsk . ccleaner, and have not found any problems .

I would appreciate some help with troubleshooting and fixing the problem . - Thanks

I would try to see if it is the operating system.

Open an DOS command prompt. Start|Run|CMD and Enter

Now in the dark black DOS screen try typing and see if the
letters match the keys you press.

If it is still giving you bad letters...it is a bad keyboard...replacement
time. If not....you might think about a os reload.

I had the same problem in both the OS and BIOS, but replacing the keyboard didn't fix it. It was on a Toshiba Satellite. I assume it was an issue with the motherboard.

Luckily only the top row of letters and numbers and the numbers and function keys were getting combined, so I was able to remap my keyboard so it worked (I had to use some auxiliary keys for number keys.) I used a program called KeyTest or KeyboardTest to see what exactly each button was activating, then I used a program called KeyTweak to remap the keys. The only issue I had with KeyTweak was that if I went back in to make changes, it reset my previous changes. So I had to remap everything at once.

I don't know if this is related, but my motherboard died completely some months later.

Another option is to use an external keyboard.

EDIT: Not to say that replacing the keyboard won't work, but it is a gamble.

I tried the DOS prompt test and still got bad letters .

I will have to find a USB keyboard . Meanwhile , I Googled and found Passmark Key test (free 30 day trial) . No key failure per se but it did reflect my the problem I am having . For example, when I typed b , n also shows as being typed too . I see bn at the top . When I typed n, b shows as beng typed too .

After I try a USB keyboard , I will take a look at Keytweak .

I am halfway considering a system restore with the OEM DVD anyway just to see .

- Thanks
