Okay I have a gateway 7405gx Its about a year and a half old. A couple months ago it just started shutting down for no reason. Only thing that happens is the fan starts up and then it just shuts down. This was okay for a while then it started happening after about only having the computer on for 15 minutes. So I decided to do a system restore and I cant even get through it without it just shutting off. Any suggestions on what is causing this nad is it a easy fix or should I just move on. Thanks

If the fan spins up to maximum speed just before the laptop shuts down, I would suspect that the CPU is overheating. The fan might be failing, or the heat sink on the CPU may just be full of dust so it cannot dissipate heat from the CPU properly. Try taking some compressed air and blow the dust out of the heat sink and see if it helps.

Open your case and completely clean it. If you have spray air, use it. If not, you can use your vacuum to pull up the loose dust (but don't touch any components) and/or use the vacuum on reverse (so it blows air) and use it. compressed air is the best option, but the vacuum can work if you are in a pinch.

My 7405GX started doing the same thing thisl last week (of course... out of warranty). Random reboots - no warning just shutsdown. When you power back on you just get the BSOD and can't read anything as it flashes up and is gone. Now I am lucky if it start up for 30 seconds. Fan is clean, put arctic silver on and still a no go. Any more ideas. This thing is only 1.5years old.

Has your laptop had any heat issues in the past? During normal operating did it seem to really heat up?

Asking this as mine had a problem where so much dust clogged the fan and stopped it from spinning. I didn't even notice this this I completely disassembled the laptop and the fan, it was so far in deep. Also got myself a laptop cooler and it is working great again.

If the time at about when it shuts down is consistent, it shows you a good chance of a heating issue. In case of my laptop, it has a heat sensor and turns on fans when needed. If yours is similar, you might hear this.
