A friend of mine's sister e-mailed me today with the following message:

Yep. I'm emailing you because of another problem I have with my laptop, except that this is the most serious one so far. I can't even start up my computer anymore. So here are the symptoms leading up to its demise:
3 weeks ago, it randomly shut down because the fan was too hot. I had cleaned it up in december and it was due for another cleaning. I was going clean it again when I came home from UT, but that never happened. Anyways, about 3 days ago, everything became extremely slow, and it took 30 seconds or so to respond for every mouse click. SO then, I deleted most of my files to make more space. Then I defragmented and checked it for any viruses but there were none. Yesterday as I was switching my computer on, I heard this weird rattling noise and the sound of a breaking spring or something (?!?!). Then it randomly shut down and it hasn't started up since. It seems like there's an actual bug crawling inside.
I'm positive that there is something wrong with the hardware and I was wondering if you could take it apart and fix it? I will be home next weekend...
