It's my moms laptop, and she claims she did nothing, i tend to believe her because she would really know where to start to screw anything up. But anyways, on with the problem:

When she tried to watch a dvd using nero showtime, the sound and video both worked, but both were so pixalated that it was unwatchable. She then tried windows media player, and this time the picture looked normal, but there was no sound, so i stepped in and downloaded interactual, but it did the same thing as wmp10.

I scanned for virus', adware, updated windows and did a system restore. I also tried to reinstall the dvd rom. I've checked the volume control, but everything seems to be working fine. I can hear both windows sounds, and mp3's normally

Please help, this has me well lets just keep it pg and say flustered.

Thanks, graeme

i have in ibm with (what looked like) a similar problem. mine is an ?irq conflict between audio and something else, which I had trouble identifying.

what may have also happened is that you uninstalled/deleted a codec. try installing "Theoretica" codec suite, they have pretty much everything you'll ever need and see if your sound comes back on. Also try playing it in "zoom player", it gives you a lot more control over DVD playback than what you are using. !!! important, uninstall any previously installed codecs before installing theoretica !!! (this is how my problem got started)
