Laptop HDD problem

I woke up this morning and looked at my laptop and was greeted with a blue screen that said something about Kernel In Page Data Error. I restarted and got a disk read error and had to restart again. I finally got to Windows but it was slow and making horrible, horrible noises. Then, all of a sudden, it cleared up. I went to the system log and saw a bunch of errors.

1. Error - Atapi - The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.

2. Warning - Disk - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

3. Error - Disk - The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

Sounds like it's time to do a scandisk. If you're running XP it's not called scandisk any more, maybe check disk or something like that - buried on some menu somewhere. Best to run it in safe mode so as not to risk more data than necessary. Do the highest level of the test available. Some notebook hard drives come out thru a hatch on the bottom or the side - make sure it's not coming loose from its connector.
