Laptop HDD Detection issues...

I just bought an hdd for a laptop (HP Pavillon ZV5000), plugged it in, it powers up but bios does not detect it at all. I know the hdd is working, I've tried this with others and it's the same issue. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

When you said "I've tried it with others and it's the same issue . . " do you mean it is not being detected also on other machines? Then the hdd must be bad. But if what you mean is that it is being detected and the hdd is actually working on other systems, then you need to try another hdd into your system. If another hdd is not also detected then you want to dig deeper into your bios to see if there is some kind of option to manually detect the hdd.

No I meant I've tried other working hdds in this laptop and it has had the same issues...

There's nothing in bios, this one is as straight to the point as they come...

what happened to the original hd?

I bought it without one...supposedly it died. At worst I'll return this to the seller but I'd prefer to get it running as it was a very good deal...

If the BIOS is as barebones as most laptops, the only thing you're going to be able to do is check all the physical connections. I mean make sure all the pins are there in the drive bay and make sure the drive bay is properly connected to the mainboard. Actually doing this would require some major disassembly of the laptop. Honestly I'd look into a return ASAP.

It is possible that the hard drive needs an adapter of some variety which goes on to the IDE pins of the hard drive much like with the Dell laptops.
