laptop hd, any drive diagnosis program that can be run from windows?

i built a sff pc that has no floppy connector or drive, i accidentally shorted the board somhow about amontha go and rmaed and got back a new one, bu ever since then, the momentous seagate laptop hd i'm using has been really loud in accessing, its not silent like it was advertised as and reviewed as, anyways, does anyone know of a program i can run from windows to check to make sure everyting is working properly?

the drive is silent, but the accesses are really loud, and somtime the computer hangs when i open the start menu, then continues after teh drive does a read, and i have 512mb of ram, so low ram is not a problem

any thoughts

i do use the intel extreme2 graphics that are in the 855GM chipset, but it only uses 32mb
