I had to jump on this. I'm hoping this and a couple 256MB sticks of RAM can spruce up my ol' PIII 750m laptop. Right now it just seems to grind and grind no matter what I do.

That's a really good question. My laptop only averages about 2.5hrs as it is on the current 10GB drive. I hope it doesn't drastically affect it.

Wow. That is BLAZING!

As far as battery life...every single user report I've seen over at notebook forums have suggested that any difference in battery life is next to zero.

I suggest robbing a bank to get the money for this drive. You'll be sure to get more work done in jail. This drive makes a difference! Get it.

Also get the Apricorn. Find it at Newegg. It took me one hour to transfer my 40 GB 4200 drive. I didn't have to reinstall Office, Photoshop etc. Save alot of time.

Man, now you're getting me excited!

Great deal! This drive is smokin' fast. I put this drive in two laptops. One had a 4200rpm drive and the other a 5200rpm drive. In both cases it made an enormous performance difference.

I have this drive in my T41 laptop....very nice.

Major upgrade over the OEM 4200rpm 30gb unit.

It is simply the FASTEST notebook drive. The Toshibia 5400rpm 16mb/cache drive is slower than the 5400rpm 8mb/cache Hitachi/IBM drive......the 7200rpm Hitachi drive is even fatser.

faster = better access times and faster burst and sustained throughput

My $.02

Dammit! Mine is backordered too :| frigging Dell.. They constantly offer crap and don't haveit... it's not worth saving $27 over newegg if I have to wait a week for it to ship.

Thanks OP.

odd, shipping was free for me, and i guess Dell doesnt have a presence in CT, cause i got it for 121.95 shipped.

and KidViciou$ where did you see it for 150, the best deal ive seen for it in the past few months was newegg for 168 +/- a couple bucks

i apologize, i meant to say 157 which is hte original price listed in the dell link

My Ordeer Status was updated....
Date of Purchase: 09/26/2004
Estimated Ship Date: on or before10/06/2004
You must be available to sign for your shipment when it is received.Although we do not anticipate a delay in your order, we occasionally run into unexpected delays in the manufacturing process. If this should happen, we will notify you and provide a revised estimated ship date.

It takes them 10 days to fill an order for a stinking hard drive :| I think I am going to Cancel and go with newegg.

well, maybe alot of people want the drive, this is posted at other places too, with all the cheap lappys now adays, i am sure alot of people are buying these drives to speed up their laptops, how long have you gone without the new hard drive? what is another 10 days going to hurt? i mean unless the old drive is broke or something, if it is not, just calm down, it is not the end of the world

word. 😀 I'll wait for it to come back in and ship. Does Dell ever cancel orders on backorder? That's my only worry.

I doubt they'll cancel the order as they are still taking orders for it on their site. BTW, they are listing a ship time of 5-7 days.

I would not buy a HITACHI drive. Where I work we replace 10 or so of these a week. I my tech lead has had to replace his 4 times in the last 1 1/2 years

I have this in my IBM t41p and it's been flawless for almost a year already.

I think almost all high-end notebook makers put Hitachi drives in their notebooks so they should be reliable.

wow, 10 a week, what r they doing, running the RMA department at dell, come on, and yoru tech had to replace his 4 times, almost sounds like something is wrong in that building or something

I've had my eye on this drive for months, waiting for it to come down. It's been slowly doing so, with Newegg and ZipZoomFly leading the way, but they're still up at $168.

Even if it takes a week to ship out, this is definitely a hot deal.

See this article at Tom's Hardware for info on this drive. Because of the new technology used in this drive, the performance gains come with a minimal loss of battery life - perhaps a few minutes. They also detected no significant difference in noise levels between this and slower drives. To sum up what is said there:

"Choose the faster hard drive whenever possible."

Mine came to $140.84 shipped. Thanks dealseaker.
