I'm just curious, I havent been following their progress and am just curious as to when we should expect to see some really high capacity drives. I'm having issues finding any good information.

honestly? Whats holding up the progress of these 2.5" harddrives? Seems like we've been in the 100s and low 200s for quite some time?

harddrive density rate of increase has begun to flatten out to follow the semiconductor industry.

so we need a change of tech before we see some larger sizes? Does this have a complete format change in store or will SATA remain the standard? The reason for all these questions is I would like to upgrade my macbook drive to hold all my large data so I dont have to worry about not having the right files at school.

Yup, Samsung is currently making 64GB flash hard drives, I think they will be on sale soon.
When they come out we will see some major changes in the HD industry over the next few years.
Not the least of which is laptops with capacities closer to desktops.

As for the other issue, the interface is sorta independant of the storage medium.
I think SATA will be the standard interface for a little while longer, even when we move into flash and newer varients of it.
The SATA interface is much faster than most hard drives can ready anyway. Only if we see massive improvements in flash read/write speed will it be required to make a new interface standard.

uh, why? flash still costs 10x more than standard hard drives, even though the price ratio has been dropping.
