laptop fixable?

....from behind the plug inlet on the laptop, this is a presario 700

it was my mothers, and as soon as that happened she said "where can i get a good deal on a laptop" without telling me why, so i told her, and she bought one.

if i cant fix this easy/cheap (because i dont know a thing about laptops and im almost broke) then ill just pitch it for parts in FS/T

any advice?

I had a compaq that had a similar problem. See if the smoke is coming from around the power adapter. Mine still worked after some resistor burned up behind there. I had to change the power plug adapter in the motherboard in order to solve the problem. It involved some soldering, but I do not know if yours is due to the same problem.
