Laptop Error

I bought a laptop off the forums about 3 months ago. Everything was working perfectly until a few days ago. When I power the laptop on, I see the Compaq startup screen and then it just abruptly shuts off. I have tried boot in the following ways: 1. On battery power only 2. No battery in the laptop, on AC power 3. Battery in the laptop, but AC power connected. Seeing as the laptop behaves in the same way in all three of these scenarios, I am stumped as to what the problem could be. I have read some posts about there being a temperature chip on the mobo, and it going bad quite frequently. I am thinking this could be my problem? Any other ideas on this behavior?

Well I am taking a break from trying to open up the laptop. I am finding that the previous owner or manufacturer put these screws in super tight. The small screw drivers these screw require do not allow me to get enough torque going to get them loose >< But anyways, any idea on what a bad temp chip would look like? Will it be noticeably burned up or will there be any visual signs at all?
