Laptop doing the crap-top on my router!

I have a Dell Inspiron PII notebook with a Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem PCI card in it. I am trying to connect to my 8 port Linksys Cable/Router switch. Everything works great except - the 'Full Duplex/Collision light is no lighting up on the router. I have tried it in another port and it is the same. Sure this notebook is a few years old as well as the Xircom card but dang I would have thought the Xircom would have been Full Duplex???!

Any ideas?

You mean PCMCIA right?
The card might not support full-duplex (it should say on it, or in related documentation).
Otherwise the cable might be bad/too long.

My neighbor has the same Dell Laptop with the same Xircom Nic/Modem PCMCIA card. I had it here to set it up for he as he bought it used off Ebay and can't remember if the Full Duplex light was lit on my router. I will look him up after dinner and ask if I can try it on my network real fast and see what it does. Will get back to you later if he will let me try it! He better! I fix all his stuff!

Check the connector. My old PCMCIA card only used four of the wires in the 8 wire RJ-45 connector. That means it was wired for half duplex and could only do half duplex. I wouldn't worry about it though, I think PCMCIA spec is for like 2 mbit/sec if my memory's correct on the matter.

That Xircom card he has is a Cardbus and not a normal PCMCIA. Regular PCMCIA Nics are slow compaired to a Desktop PC with a PCI NIC but the Cardbus ones are quite fast. Don't know the specs but my cardbus card keeps up with any of the Nics in my desktop machines.
Only 4 of the 8 wires are used with any Cat-5 cable. Two Recieve and two send. 1 & 3 2 & 6.

Opps, by the time I ran into my neighbor the message was off the main screen and I forgot all about it. His seems to do it too. Works fast and like anything else here but the hub shows half duplex. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

My friend was in the hospital and I did not even know.
