Laptop doesn't get internet anymore...

I had my ethernet cable from the modem directly connected to my laptop and everything was working fine.
Then I unplugged it and connected it to my deskto and then back to my laptop but it now only connects to modem without getting an IP address...keeps aquiring network address.
However internet works fine when cable is plugged into desktop.
I tried almost everything...reset the modem, replugged it...installed windows xp on another partition (the previous was vista) and nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?

I'm fairly weak with my networking, but I'd concentrate on the laptop end. Since your desktop works, you know the modem and cable are good. Maybe the NIC went up on the lappy. Does wireless work?

sounds like a nic problem to me.

ISP: tested
Modem: tested
Router: tested
Cable: tested
NIC: X
OS: tested
3rd party software: tested

That pretty much sums it up imo.

Change the MAC address on the laptop's nic and make sure there are no duplicate IP addresses on the network. I've seen people lock down their networks to specific MAC addresses and forget to add the new one when they get a new nic card. And some services program their cable modems to lock onto the MAC of the latest successful intranet connection; to reset it unplug the cable modem for 5 minutes. Could any of these be the solution?

what antivirus app do you run?

Once upon a time I had your same trouble and what solved it in my instance (running Win XP Pro SP3 & Kaspersky Internet Security) was:

control panel \ network connections \ right click your connections icon \ properties \ general tab uncheck kaspersky anti virus ndis minifilter, then restart.

Restart is essential.
