Laptop dies ... buying new laptop .. help

I had a cheap (relatively new) HP laptop. The HD died. I know the HD is toast because I can hear the damn thing make a strange noise when I power down. I think more than just that though. I think the Ethernet chip is cooked granted the mobo is OK. Muse have had a power surge or something.

So, instead of fixing my $350 when new laptop (refurb), I'm just going to get a new one. probably going to take the HD out and sell it as is at work for $100/OBO.

So, my first WTF came with the realization that I can not get a 17" laptop for $400 anymore. Really? Well, that's my one requirement. 17" 1920x1080. Maybe a step down in resolution if cost is an issue. I really want to keep this under $500 and get a 17" screen.

Any model suggestions? Or models to avoid?

Hoping to place order Sunday. If I can get it at Best Buy without spending more I will do that.

Not sure if you can get a 1920x1080 for that price, you will probably get a 1600x900... newegg has a Lenovo i3 for $600. I think its well worth the extra $100. I absolutely love Lenovo, best build quality IMHO. Expensive but worth it.

What would 1920x1080 start at?

HOLY CRAP. Did a search at newegg. The lowest price is $1079.

Could get a refurb 17" 1600x900 for about $400. Not playing that game again though.

Quite a few good choices for brand new 17" HP's under $500 on eBay but non at the screen resolution you are looking for, all the ones in this price range are 1600x900.

Check out the Dell outlet. Here's a scratch and dent Studio 17 w/ WUXGA screen for $550. Yes, it's refurbished, but it also comes with a 1 year warranty (with options to extend). That's the same warranty as you would get on a new machine in this price range.
