Laptop CPU Question (P-M or AMD64)

Hello all,

I'm looking at getting a new laptop to be my portable solution for Adobe Premiere and After Effects. I'll have an external drive for the HD, so won't need to worry about onboard fast hard drive. So tell me, under the circumstances, which would be better...

Intel Pentium M Processor
or
AMD Athlon 64 Processor

How does the speeds of the P-M compare with AMD's? Such as 1.4GHz to 1.7GHz compared to 3000+ to 3400+??

I just don't understand Intel's clocking of their P-M's.

The only other thing I'd do is a wee bit of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, so I need good CPU power. What would be faster???

Thanks!
Aaron

p-m's havea 10 stage pipe meaning they will be slightly faster clock for clock. However, they excel in single threaded apps such as gaming, more so then editing ect. If you are gonna do gaming or simple calculations that requireone thread, go with pm, if you are doing editing, encoding ect, go with a-64

You mean 14 don't you???

Go with an AMD 64 for the fact that #1 - Centrino laptops have the crappy Intel Graphics Accelerator and #2- With AMD laptops not forcing companies to "closed" source you can get a good laptop graphics. I'm looking at the Acer Travelmate 5000 series.

Acer and turion processor is the way to go for being powerfull yet having the option for battery life. i can game great on my travelmate 4402 its in my sig. you can turn the power down on the x700 and it has cool and quiet so i run well over 3 hours on a 6cell for word procession or surfing on battery. runs everyting up to hl2 and doom 3 great which it seems is all you need it for.

Do you have any idea WTF you're talking about?

As for the OP, you said you found your answer, and I hope you went with a A64 or Turion based notebook for that purpose.

A top-of-the-line Turion (low-power AMD64) will usually outperform a top-of-the line Pentium M, especially in video encoding. However, the Pentium M will usually give you far better battery life, especially when you're doing less processor-intensive tasks, like word processing. The Z71V, made by Asus, would likely suit your needs well; it's commonly availible in barebones form. It uses 533mhz DDR2, so memory performance is likely to be pretty darn good, and supports all the latest-model Pentium M processors. It sports a mobile 6600 graphics card, but it is included in the form of a mini-PCIe module, so it can be upgraded later.
The Acer TravelMate mentioned above will also perform well. The X700 graphics card is a strong performer, and Acer is known for good quality. A ML-40 will not give battery life as good as a 2.1ghz Pentium M, but it will likely be a good bit cheaper, and outperform it as well.

The AMD64 non-turion line is in another category altogether. A single-core AMD64 notebook with a 3400+ or 3700+ will outperform any Pentium M, and a dual-core AMD notebook will plow through anything else on the market, period. However, anything capable of getting rid of the heat from an Athlon 64 is likely to be huge, and the battery life will likely be lousy.

If battery life isn't a major concern, get a Gateway mx7515 from bestbuy. The gateway will give you 2-2.6 hrs battery life, and isn;t the lightest laptop, but is ridiculously fast, especially for the money.

It has an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.6ghz) processor
1 gb ram
dvd burner
100gb hd
15.4" screen
decent x600 videocard
4 usb 2.0 plus one firewire port built in
and can be had for $1199 when bestbuy runs their monthly sales on gateways.

I have the older version of this laptop, and You really cannot get a better laptop for running premier / after effects than this for less than $2500
